There’s no doubt that setting goals is great. However, these goals sometimes scare and paralyze us when we imagine the mountains to be climbed to achieve them.
Being an adult is hard enough. And everyone has their fair share of goal setting, time management, and prioritizing activities. A few weeks ago, I tried to set goals for my website and YouTube Channel and Roger Seip’s book Train Your Brain for Success came in handy. In this book, he shares the secret to setting outstanding goals. And his process is quite simple: Make your goals challenging enough to trigger your growth, but realistic enough not to scare you. Below are a few tips I got from Roger Seip’s book on goal setting.
How to Set Goals
Break Down Your Goal Into Small Action Steps
Setting goals can seem daunting. Particularly if your mind and skill sets don’t seem to align. To solve this problem, some people just avoid goal setting altogether and live life on cruise control. But this is no way to live and grow. I think Roger Seip’s advice gives us a better way to manage our goal-setting. Pick a few things you wish to achieve, and divide it into different stages – each stage having a tiny challenge.
By breaking down goals into action steps and challenging ourselves one step at a time – we stand a bigger chance of getting the job done. You can’t become a pilot in a day. It takes time. Acknowledging this time gives you peace and helps you set goals that don’t leave you paralyzed at a glimpse.
Plan Your Week Ahead
Another tip I got from Roger Seip’s book on goal setting is planning your week ahead of time. We usually set monthly, quarterly, or yearly goals. But sometimes we forget to break these into weeks, days, and hours. Imagine you have a goal to pass an exam at the end of the year. It helps to break down the course outline into monthly, weekly, and daily milestones. That way, you stand a higher chance of achieving your desired outcome.
Repeat!
Goal setting is not a one-time thing. It’s a continuous process that only ends when our target has been met. So don’t stop today, don’t stop tomorrow. Keep going until that desire is achieved. And then, start all over again with the next milestone.
Good luck with your goal setting! I hope this tip helps you set realistic goals and achieve them by the year’s end. If you have other goal-setting tips, kindly share them in the comment section.
